This novel has two major plot lines.
The Clan Wolf vs Clan Jade Falcon [[Refusal War|refusal war]] is told in epic detail.
The Sarna march disentegration into the chaos march is seen at the political level, as Marik, Liao and Davion square off after the death of Joshua Marik in Davion care.

The Refusal war puts Ulric Kerensky alongside Vlad, Natasha on her own, and Phelan all on separate campaigns to weaken, if not annihilate a crusader clan to ensure the Tukkayid truce remains in place.

Ulric Kerensky and Vlad do not make a lot of appearances, but Ulric really shows his comtempt for Vlad, and his desire to fight alongside him and other wolf crusaders just to watch them fall around him.

The [[Twycross#Refusal_War|fourth battle of Twycross]] puts Natasha Kerensky and her Daishi in the great Gash, for a fight that won't be told in detail until the novel I Am Jade Falcon.

The refusal war also re-unites the Kells as Morgan Kell creates the [[Arc-Royal_Defense_Cordon|Arc-Royal defense Cordon]] as a way to stay out of simmering Davion family tensions.

In the Sarna march, we have a mixed sets of viewpoints, following the major heads of state directing war across their empires, while also engaging in clandestine activities of all sort. This is further highlighted with some additional lower level viewpoints from the battlefields of [[Operation_GUERRERO|Operation Guerrero]], and behind the black curtain with the spies and saboteurs.
