On Homestead, Warrior House Lu Sann succeeded in destroying the hated Ninth Rangers of the Illician Lancers with assistance from the Third Confederation Reserve Cavalry. 2nd Cunningham’s Commandos

Activated in the late 3040s, the Second Commandos regiment was only possible thanks to the AFFC’s modernization programs. The force was able to expand quickly by purchasing outdated ’Mechs destined for mothballs on Novaya Zemlya at a substantial discount. Doing so put the Commandos into serious debt, but the benefits far outweighed the costs, and by the middle of the 3050s the expanded Commandos were mostly debt-free and beginning a widespread upgrade. Anchored by an assault command company and two heavy battalion command companies, the rest of the regiment runs on average more toward the medium weight class. Its “swarm” company is its standout, though—these twelve Grasshoppers led the charge time and again against the Third Confederation Reserve Cavalry on Gei-Fu, breaking its back and ushering in further Second Regiment successes on New Westin and Sendalor before significant damage in the Capellan counterattack and a collapse of supply lines forced the regiment to fall back to Mentasta by February of 3069.<ref name=MSU>''Mercenaries Supplemental Update'', p. 47: "Cunningham's Commandos"</ref>

Sao-wei Akbar ibn Rashid: Sao-wei ibn Rashid commanded a lance in the Fifth Confederation Reserve Cavalry during Operation THUNDERSTRIKE. When the rest of his lance was destroyed by the Jie Fang Legion on New Westin, Rashid could have retreated. Instead he charged into close range and damaged several heavy ’Mechs. He refused to retreat after they returned fire. Maneuvering his WSP-3L Wasp in a wide arc, he caught the slower ’Mechs pivoting their formation. With a clear path to an ancient Archer, ibn Rashid increased speed. Dodging its rear lasers, he crashed into the heavy ’Mech. The impact breached the Archer’s magazine. The ensuing explosion killed both MechWarriors. However, ibn Rashid’s Wasp was later salvaged and put back into service. It remains in use with the Fifth Confederation Reserve Cavalry.<ref name=TROCI>''Technical Readout: Clan Invasion'', p. 90: "WSP-3L ''Wasp''"</ref> -->

Overview

In August 3068 Wave Three of Operation SOVEREIGN JUSTICE came to New Westin, which fell easily to the Second Cunningham's Commandos.[2][5]

The reversal came swiftly enough however, with New Westin a Wave One target of Operation THUNDERSTRIKE in October. Sometime prior the Jie Fang Legion reinforced New Westin alongside the Commandos. The Fifth Confederation Reserve Cavalry was a combined-arms unit that was tasked to retake the world, with some Death Commando support. Fighting was fierce, especially against the "renegade" Legion. Sao-wei Akbar ibn Rashid commanded a lance that was obliterated by the Lancers, but rather than retreat in his Stealth Armor WSP-3L Wasp he charged the heavier ’Mechs and damaged several. As the Lancer formation pivoted he maneuvered his Wasp into the rear of an outdated Archer and charged into its weakened rear armor. The impact detonated the Archer's LRM magazine, killing both pilots. Despite the Cavalry taking heavy losses, they and Death Commandos overran Legions positions and annihilated the unit. The Commandos likewise took significant losses but managed to retreat off world.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Aftermath

On 28 January 3069, Capellan propaganda sources declared the final destruction of the Legion. The 5th CRC returned to their garrison stations and focused on rebuilding from the heavy losses. Though Sao-wei ibn Rashid perished, his Wasp was salvaged and returned to the CRC's roles.[4][1][6]
