The following represents a classification system for official BattleTech products used within the BattleTech Wiki. Terms in bold denotes an object type which is used in the infoboxes for product articles. Definitions for respective types are includes in brackets.

  • Products Concerning (Tabletop/Board Game) Gameplay
    • Boxed Set/Board Game/GameBox/??? [a bundled product that consists of a rulebook and other foundational game components (e.g., maps, tokens, miniatures, record sheets) used to play a specified game or game expansion]
    • Rulebook [a product consisting of a rulebook]
    • Miniature set [a product that primarily consists of one or more miniatures. Supplemental materials may be included, but the principal content is the miniatures themselves.]
    • Map set [a product that consists of one or more full maps or map sheets.]
    • 'Map supplement [a product that consists of components used to modify maps, e.g. HexPacks]
    • Record Sheets (includes Alpha Strike Cards) [a product consisting of record sheets or other products intended for in-game record tracking of units]
    • Technical Readout and Recognition Guide [See Category:Technical Readouts and Recognition Guides for definition of each. The category tag Technical Readouts and Recognition Guides is used for both, but they form two separate product types.]
    • Sourcebook [a product that is a sourcebook (definition needed)]
    • Scenario Packs [a product that is a scenario pack (definition needed)]
    • Other Game Aids
      • Dice (Note: Dice of any sort. Regular dice (which almost never sold as a standalone BattleTech product), dice trackers (e.g, movement dice), tactical dice, or other dice products that play a role different than random number generation belong to the category Game Aids. Dice that are cosmetically altered, but retain the same function as regular dice, belong to both the categories Game Aids and Accessories.

    • Dice (Dice that are cosmetically altered, but retain the same function as regular dice, belong to both the categories Game Aids and Accessories. However, dice whose role is purely functional belong to Game Aids but not Accessories.)

Note: A product article should also include category tags affiliated with the type of the product, but certain products may be relevant to other categories too. For example, intro boxed sets include a rulebook, which may or may not be available as a standalone product, so the category tag Rule Books is appropriate additional category tag for the product article regarding a specific intro box set.
