History

Formation

The Twenty-third Marik Militia was one of nine regiments of the Marik Militia to be reactivated or reconstituted after the Star League Council repealed the Council Edict of 2650 in 2752.[1] In 2783 Captain-General Kenyon Marik deployed the Twenty-third and a sister regiment, the Sixth Marik Militia, to seize the Terran Hegemony world of Wasat, in part to ensure that the Capellan Confederation couldn't annex the world.[3]

First Succession War

In 2788 the Twenty-third and two other Free Worlds League Military regiments, the Third and Seventh Oriente Hussars were stationed on the former Hegemony district capital of Tyrfing when a brutal five-way battle for control of the world began. The Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces and Capellan Confederation Armed Forces were the first to arrive, with raiders from the Seventh Donegal Guards, Stealths, Prefectorate Guard and Ariana Grenadiers attacking the League troops and each other; these were soon joined by the Fourth Davion Guards and Fifth Dragonlords - dispatched by the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns - and the Eighth Sword of Light and Black Sharks, dispatched by the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery. Tyrfing was already badly damaged, with much of its ecology poisoned by the aftereffects of the nuclear and chemical weapons used during the Amaris Civil War, and the five-way battle for control of Tyrfing - or for access to loot any remaining Star League technology - effectively ended any prospect of Tyrfing continuing to be a viable world. Between the rampant use of nuclear and chemical weapons and the lingering poisons left from the previous war, almost ninety percent of the infantry forces on Tyrfing were dead when the battle ended in February 2789, and only a fifth of the Twenty-third's conventional forces were still combat ready - more than that of any other regiment to have participated in the battle. Tyrfing's pre-Coup civilian population of more than three billion had been reduced to just eight million and was falling steadily, with every major city destroyed during the conflict; by the end of the First Succession War that population had dropped to five million and was still falling, with the League government placing Tyrfing under quarantine in 2824.[4][5]

The Twenty-third was subsequently destroyed later during the war.[6]

Second Succession War

The Twenty-third Militia contained the survivors of the Eighth Marik Militia after that unit was destroyed on Wisconsin in 2838. The defending Eighth Militia was betrayed by traitors in the unit, allowing Liao saboteurs to poison their water supply. The Eighth wasn't able to resist the attacking Justine's Grenadiers, and many Militia troops were captured. Unfortunately only 25% of the captured troops survived.[7]

Anton's Revolt

The Twenty-third played no role in Anton Marik's revolt. They spent most of their time garrisoning Merak and Marik.[8]

Fourth Succession War

Andurien Secession

Clan Invasion Era

In 3054 the Twenty-third Marik Militia was the garrison force assigned to the world of Keystone.[9]

Operation Guerrero

Operation Bulldog

Jihad

In 3067, the Twenty-third sent in a record number of transfer requests, asking for a posting on the Capellan Confederation border. The LCCC hadn't authorized any transfers however,[10] leaving the Twenty-third on Keystone in 3067.[11]
