Erl Karns was a a medical doctor.

Treating Ardan Sortek[edit]
In 3025, Karns was involved in the medical evacuation of a wounded and delirious Ardan Sortek from Stein's Folly by a Lyran Commonwealth DropShip after the Lyran's ally, the Federated Suns, had recaptured that world from the Capellans. During his subsequent treatment on Tharkad, Sortek told a wholly unbelievable conspiracy story about a doppelgänger of Hanse Davion that he had seen while heavily drugged and held as a Capellan captive on Stein's Folly.
Melissa Steiner personally found out that Erl Karns, the doctor treating Sortek, had highly dubious contacts. This, among some other strange coincidences, prompted House Steiner to consider Sortek's story somewhat less fantastic after all. They provided Sortek with a JumpShip to return to Stein's Folly and pursue his investigation, a decision which would have a significant impact on the history of the Inner Sphere as it led to Sortek uncovering and thwarting the doppelgänger ploy for real, saving the nascent Steiner-Davion alliance from being sabotaged by the Capellans and focusing Hanse Davion's ire on the Capellans, which would also have far-ranging consequences.[2]
Death[edit]
Karns would meet his end in July 3028 at the hands of a ComStar agent during a meeting on Maria Island on Terra.[1]
