This follows a Smoke Jaguar mechwarrior, mechwarrior Trent, from the battle field of [[Battle_of_Tukayyid_(3052)|Tukkayid]] up until roughly the end of the novel impetus of war. In the opening sequence mechwarrior Trent takes a bondswoman (Judith) on Tukkayid just before being severely wounded. Upon awaking, the Trent finds out that the clan is purging those involved in the shame of Tukkayid, and as a result he has lost his sponsership for a bloodname. At the same time the clan has determined that inner sphere mechwarriors are never to be permitted to be released from Bondsman status and made warriors, ensure that Judith has no chance of being more than a technician under the clans. As the story progresses, things go from bad to worse for mechwarrior Trent, as he is betrayed by a friend as part of the political machinations of the Smoke Jaguar leadership. He loses the melee for a blood name due to his main rival and galaxy commander sabotaging his mech, is denied the chance to lead a Binary, and held responsible for all poor outcomes of Binary/ Galaxy at every turn.
