He employs [[Thel]], a bookish woman with a love of ancient Terran poetry, as his chief archeologist. At age 65, while on a dig, Thel is attacked by a gang of neo-[[Word of Blake|Blakist]] scavengers. During the fight, accidental detonations knock her underground alongside one of the scavengers, a young teen nicknamed Tom Rum. Trapped below the surface, Thel bandages Tom Rum's broken leg and helps him escape the tunnels, discovering a mostly-intact ''[[Grasshopper]]'' along the way.
