Fighting for Overlord Stables as of 3062, on 9 August 3062 Jarman Bauer fought against William Paulson in the Steiner Stadium for one of the last remaining slot in the 3062 Grand Championship. Trapping Paulson in one of the corners of the arena, Bauer was able to close to point-blank range where his Penetrators six-torso mounted Medium Pulse Lasers made short work of Paulson's Orion.

On 10 August, Bauer was the lead guest on that night's episode of Donegal Broadcasting Company's famous MechTalk holovid show, reliving his upset defeat of Paulson with its host Todd Richards and discussing his chances in the Grand Tournament. Bauer's performance however was derided by the show's other guest and the warrior he was due to face on Day One of the tournament, Blackstar Stables warrior Stormin' Michael Searcy, who mocked Bauer's skills and tactics as simplistic, to the point of suggesting that Paulson even if drunk could only have lost if he actively threw the fight for Bauer. When Bauer attempted to respond, Searcy revealed the now shocked Lyran's failure on Outreach to the public, the Davion fighter derisively calling him Farmer - an insulting play-on words as Bauer was the German word for Farmer as well as the Solaris VII Slang term meaning a warrior piloting a 'Mech unworthy of the arenas. Though Todd Richard attempted to bring the conflict back on script as both warrior's bodyguards restrained them, Searcy slipped his bodyguard's grip and laid out Bauer with a single punch to the jaw before the Blackstar warrior was rushed out the studio.

Aside from the enhancing the theatrics of their feud, Searcy's needling of his opponent in the interview had the desired effect. Reacting as the Blackstar warrior had anticipated, during their duel on 11 August 3062 in Kobe's Ishiyama arena, the angry Jarman Bauer rushed to close with the Davion warrior's Dragon Fire, modified to mount a mammoth LB 20-X AC that tore Bauer's Penetrator to scrap, his defeat cementing his nickname as The Farmer.
