The 90-ton [[assault 'Mech]] conceived and best known as the '''''Mauler''''' has a particularly convoluted development history, during which it was alternately also known as the '''''Linesman''''', '''''Nainokami''''' and '''''Daboku''''' at different stages of its evolution.

==Description==
The standard ''Mauler'' is protected with eleven and a half tons of [[ferro-fibrous]] armor and has a maximum speed of 54 km/h. Built to engage targets at extremely long ranges, the 'Mech is armed almost solely with long range weaponry. While this left the ''Mauler'' vulnerable to rushing by 'Mechs armed with short range weaponry, a skilled [[MechWarrior (pilot)|MechWarrior]] can use the range advantage offered to minimize damage to the ''Mauler'' while simultaneously causing as much damage as possible to enemy combatants. The 'Mech is particularly unsuited to urban combat where its long range weaponry has substantial difficulty in targeting enemy units.

==Design History==
Although now usually associated with the [[Draconis Combine]], who perfected the design and were the first to put it in regular production, the original MAL-1PT5 ''Mauler'' was actually created by [[Earthwerks Incorporated]] in the [[Capellan Confederation]] alongside the ''[[Cataphract]]'' just prior to [[3022]].<ref name=S15>''Shrapnel'' magazine, issue #15, pp. 183-196 - "Technical Readout: The Untold Mauler"</ref> In 3022 and [[3023]], the six handcrafted ''Mauler'' prototypes that Earthwerks had custom-built (one of them the MAL-1PT6 subvariant) were deployed in [[McCarron's Long March]] for field testing. They were found to be very effective at long-range support from the sidelines, earning them the nickname ''Linesman''.<ref name=S15/> Two of the prototypes fell on [[Beten Kaitos]] and were salvaged by the [[Federated Suns]] for analysis.<ref name=S15/>

Despite the overall successful field test, the ''Mauler'' project was subsequently abandoned by the Confederation in favor of the ''Cataphract'' which fulfilled the Confederation's needs much better, being significantly cheaper, more effective at conventional combat ranges, and easier on logistics. Earthwerks subsequently sold the plans to [[Luthien Armor Works]] in the [[Draconis Combine]], where they were filed as Project ''Nainokami''.<ref name=S15/> Following the rediscovery of lost technology through the [[Helm Memory Core]], a think tank of Combine engineers upgraded it with recovered technologies in [[3036]] and named the upgraded testbed design ''[[Daboku]]''.<ref name=S15/> ''Daboku''s were then deployed along the Combine border as early as [[Introduction Year::3038]] with selected [[DCMS]] units. When encountering them in the [[War of 3039]], [[Federated Commonwealth]] forces were already familiar with the design, which they kept calling the ''Mauler''.

Because the ''Daboku'' turned out a design failure suffering from crippling construction flaws, leading to many being captured in the War of 3039, Luthien Armor Works shelved the design and consigned the name to history. For its redesigned successor they would later revert to the name ''Mauler'' in order to avoid the stigma associated with the earlier shameful failure. As a result, the ''Daboku'' is officially treated as a different, distinct 'Mech design from the ''Mauler'' although in reality it was merely an evolutionary stage between the original Capellan prototype from 3022 and the eventual standardized MAL-1R design that was officially unveiled in [[3048]] and put into regular production. 

The [[Federated Commonwealth]] had captured a number of ''Mauler''s (or ''Daboku''s) over time and deployed these on the [[periphery]] fringes of [[Lyran Commonwealth|Lyran]] space.<ref name=SS77>''1st Somerset Strikers'' sourcebook, p. 77</ref> As a result, the ''Mauler'' faced the [[Clans]] in all invasion corridors when the initial [[Clan Invasion]] began in [[3050]].<ref name=S15/><ref name=SS77>''1st Somerset Strikers'' sourcebook, p. 77</ref> One was piloted by [[Zachary Miles Hawkins]] of [[1st Somerset Strikers]] fame, whose role was subsequently showcased in an embellished format in a hugely popular if factually inaccurate [[BattleTech: The Animated Series|holo series]]. At around the same time, [[Theodore Kurita]] authorized the use of the "new" ''Mauler'' design as a poster child for a marketing campaign with the newly formed [[Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission]], to announce the end of the Combine's [[Death to Mercenaries]] policy.<ref name=S15/> Combined, these media appearances gave the ''Mauler'' an outsized presence in the public eye, cementing its fame.<ref name=S15/>

In initial reports (the ''[[Technical Readout: 3050]]''), [[ComStar]] [[Adept]] [[Merle Jimmus]] suggested that the MAL-1R ''Mauler'' was a new design being tested for production by LAW as of [[3052]]. However, a subsequent ComStar document (the ''[[1st Somerset Strikers (sourcebook)|1st Somerset Strikers]]'' sourcebook) referred to Adept Jimmus' earlier report as "less than accurate", pointing out that while Adept Jimmus was technically correct that it was a new 'Mech or at least treated as such by Luthien Armor Works, the design was in truth long past its ''Daboku'' prototype stage.

===Real world history===
The ''Mauler''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s convoluted history mirrors its equally convoluted real world history within the [[BattleTech]] setting:

It first appeared in the 1990 publication ''Technical Readout: 3050'' (framed as an in-universe document produced by ComStar) where it was portrayed as an all-new Draconis Combine design as of ca. 3052. In the German edition of BattleTech, the 'Mech's name was given as ''Nainokami''.

However, in the 1994 [[BattleTech: The Animated Series|animated BattleTech series]] the ''Mauler'' featured prominently in a 3050 setting in the hands of Federated Commonwealth pilots. This conundrum was adressed in the 1995 [[1st Somerset Strikers (sourcebook)|sourcebook]], by dismissing the earlier Technical Readout entry as "less than accurate" and clarifying that the ''Mauler'' had been deployed as early as 3038, with "many" captured by the Federated Commonwealth in the War of 3039.<ref name=SS77/>

In 1996, the ''[[MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries]]'' computer game was released. Set in ca. the 3040s up until the [[Battle of Tukayyid]], it prominently featured the ''Mauler'' on the cover (with [[Hansen's Roughriders]] insignia) and as part of a [[Com Guard]] force in the [[Battle of Tukayyid]] in a final cutscene.

In addition, [[MechForce Germany]] had published the (apocryphal) LMN-1PT5 ''[[Linesman]]'' in ca. 1994 through their ''[[Life Support (magazine)|Life Support magazine]], issue #4, which was a prototype precursor to the ''Mauler'' with similar visual appearance and 3025-era technology; it seems the intention was to give German players a chance at playing the popular design in the 3025 era. Its background described it as an abortive Capellan design that had seen field-testing during McCarron's Long March. The German edition of the [[Solaris VII Box Set]] included stats for the MAL-1PT5 ''Mauler'' that was almost identical to the ''Linesman'', and in 2002 the nonfictional German-only ''[[BattleTech – Die Welt des 31. Jahrhunderts]]'' publication also mentioned it.

In 2009, ''[[Technical Readout: 3039]]'' revisited the ''Mauler'' by introducing the ''Daboku'' as its predecessor, though without mentioning the ''Linesman'' or ''Nainokami''. It served primarily to explain the existence of "''Mauler''s" in the 3030s and early 3040, when their technology base would feel anachronistic, by providing a variant with much less advanced technology (in fact, [[CASE]] is the only advanced technology on the design).

[[Shrapnel (magazine)/Issue 15|''Shrapnel'' magazine, issue #15]], published in December of 2023, canonized the ''Linesman'' and its role in the backstory of the ''Mauler'', establishing that ''Mauler'' was indeed the original Capellan name for the 'Mech and MAL its alphanumerical designation from the beginning. "''Linesman''" was just a nickname and the LMN- alphanumerical designation is thus non-canon or apocryphal at best. The article also established "''Nainokami''" (the name of the ''Mauler'' in the German edition of BattleTech) as the initial project name within the Draconis Combine, and on the sidelines canonized the MAL-1PT5 from the German Solaris VII boxed set through the description [[Michael Romney]] as a notable pilot.

The prominent appearance of the ''Mauler'' both on the cover of the ''MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries'' game and within the game was alluded to by mentioning a joint advertising campaign for the newly-formed MRBC with Theodore Kurita.

==Weapons and Equipment==
The ''Mauler'' is armed with four [[Imperator Smoothie-2]] [[Autocannon/2]]s as its longest ranged primary weapons. Individually, the damage the AC/2s deal is insignificant, but together they can steadily whittle away armor at extreme range. The 'Mech also carries two [[Shigunga (LRM15)|Shigunga]] [[LRM-15]] launchers, adding much needed punch to the extreme reach of its four autocannons. The 'Mech also carries two [[Victory Nickel Alloy]] [[ER Large Laser]]s for added long range punch.

While the ''Mauler'' is outfitted with [[CASE]] to protect its vulnerable ammunition bays, its heavily ballistic and missile based weapons complement forces reliance on secure supply lines to properly satiate its weaponry's voracious appetite for ammunition. With a maximum speed of 54 km/h, the Mauler is equipped to stay far back and support faster allies.

==Variants==
*; MAL-1PT5 : The original Capellan prototype design was built completely from stock [[Succession Wars era]] technology. It mounts 12 standard heat sinks instead of double heat sinks, 12.5 tons of standard armor instead of ferro-fibrous armor, and no CASE.
