Montgomery Smith was a Major in the RAF assigned to the Bryant Citizens Militia by 3138.[1]

He served two tours of duty as a MechWarrior before becoming a member of the Bryant Planetary Militia prior to the Blackout.
When the HPG net collapsed, he had settled down to life on a farm driving a HarvesterMech on a plot of personal farmland he had secured as part of his Republic citizenship.
The blackout prompted a surge in the planet's 'Mech defense forces, and he reenlisted returning to the cockpit once more. Those new years serving were uneventful and though several times splinter groups tried to recruit him, he showed no inclination to leave Bryant.
Interestingly enough, when the Bryant Planetary Militia was nationalized by the RAF, he was not among the MechWarriors taken. Instead, he was granted the rank of Major and assigned the command of one of the new infantry units of the Bryant Citizens Militia.[1]
