Elias hired a [[mercenary]] outfit to attack the forces assembling on Emil's land in order to gather information about them, and their [[BattleMechs]]' gun camera footage and sensor readings identified them as belonging to the [[Free Worlds League]]. Having been exposed, the League troops quickly mobilized and moved on Elias' estate, only to be repelled attempting to ford the Verona River by the combined resistance of the [[House von Richter|House Richter]] Honor Guard and entire [[Penobscot]] [[Penobscot_Cavanaugh_II_Theater_Militia|militia]]. Emil retreated to his villa in the Prospect Mountains while the FWL forces prepared their defenses along the only road that travels through the area.
