Due to the wide variety of potential explosives that can be found in the BattleTech universe, the Universal Ordinance Rating Standard was created before the first Star League was formed. This system continues go be in use over a millenia later.

Explosives are rated on a standard from A to E. Where A grade explosives are smaller explosives, such as Microgrenades or small explosives used by covert agents, and E grade explosives are large scale destructive explosives, such as the High-Explosive Bomb commonly mounted on Aerospace Fighters, as well as Heavy Mortar ordinance. Each category of explosive has it's own set of damage, measured in the RPG damage scale, and each subcategory has different values, like a Stun Grenade will function differently than a conventional Grenade.
