The '''Vega Protectorate''' was a proto-state that arose on [[Vega]] in December [[3136]] from a mix of native authorities and [[Clan Ghost Bear]] warriors. Expanding to include several other former [[Republic of the Sphere|Republic]] worlds, the Protectorate existed as a satellite state of the [[Rasalhague Dominion]] before being absorbed by the latter in June [[3144]].

==History==
During the [[Blackout]], [[Vega]], the capital of [[Prefecture I]] of the [[Republic of the Sphere]], endured an attack on its [[HPG]], while at the same time a series of devastating attacks destroyed all of the planetary government. Vega was quickly engulfed in chaos and civil war. Later it was discovered that the attack on government was the work of agents of the [[Draconis Combine]] attempting to retake their lost planets.

In [[3136]], [[Omega Galaxy (Rasalhague Dominion)|Omega Galaxy]] of [[Clan Ghost Bear]] found itself on a relief mission to aid Vega, invited by the Republic of the Sphere.<ref name=TbC001>"Trial by Chaos, p. 1"</ref>

Omega Galaxy easily destroyed the warlords, but later found themselves fighting a guerrilla war, facing an enemy always growing, and a population more hostile every day. During this, a new philosophy started spreading among the Ghost Bears: the "[[Freeminders]]", who wanted their clan to join with the [[Inner Sphere]] people. [[Galaxy Commander]] of Omega, [[Isis Bekker]] found proof the [[Draconis Combine]] was planning to invade the planet, and she took the only possible decision: she joined the Freeminders, marrying her lover, the Vegan temporary governor, Vincent Florala. <ref name=TbC002>"Trial by Chaos, p. 264"</ref>

The joint forces of the Bears and Vegans, with the unexpected assistance of the mercenary group [[12th Vegan Rangers]] under a contract from [[Jacob Bannson]], defeated the invasion, and announced the formation of the new state indirectly protected by Clan Ghost Bear, the Vega Protectorate. <ref name=TbC003>"Trial by Chaos, p. 290"</ref>

Due to the Vega Protectorate’s independence, Omega was starved of supplies by the Rasalhague Dominion, and the little new equipment it was able to obtain consisted largely of salvage or equipment purchased from [[Clan Sea Fox]]. When the [[First Vega Regulars]] successfully fought off an invasion by the [[12th Falcon Jaegers (Clan Jade Falcon)|Twelfth Falcon Jaegers]] in [[3142]], they not only achieved a notable victory - they also secured valuable salvage. Whilst Omega lacked equipment, it had no problem attracting recruits from among the Vegan population, particularly after the Dominion began shipping Freeminders off to the Protectorate.<ref name="FM:3145p164">''Field Manual: 3145'', p. 164, "Omega Galaxy"</ref> <ref name=ER3145p72>''Era Report: 3145'', p. 72</ref>

After existing for several years as a client state and trading partner of Rasalhague, the Protectorate was finally absorbed into the Dominion in 3144 when the latter annexed the isolated [[Lyran Commonwealth]] worlds between the two states. Even after the merger the former Protectorate enjoyed a high level of autonomy within the Dominion, and even added four nearby worlds.<ref name=ER3145p24/> <ref name=ER3145p72/>
