History

The Winnetka was a Merchant-class JumpShip. In or shortly before 3017[1] its crew discovered a large Star League supply facility on an unnamed periphery planet. Dumping their cargo of industrial sand from Botany Bay they loaded their DropShips with every piece of equipment they could find.[2]

Most crew members sold their share of the find. One Warrant Officer Samuel Lewis chose a large consignment of Omni 25 fusion engines as his share. From these he developed the successful Savannah Master hovercraft design and became president of S. L. Lewis Incorporated.[2]

Notes

  • The Winnetka and its cargo of industrial sand, an off-hand anecdote in the writeup for the Savannah Master hovercraft, apparently inspired the short story Godt Bytte which explores how and why "industrial sand" from Botany Bay would be a viable export good worth carring to other star systems.
