The Novel follows Brian Cameron, a recent Mechwarrior graduate who is selected to serve as the communications officer to Jamie Wolf, and thus gets a front line view of the Wolf's Dragoons Civil War. The novel is written in some sections as though the entire novel is a story being told by Brian many years after the events took place.

The other major novel viewpoint is Elson Novacat, an elemental captured at the battle of Luthien, and taken as a bondsman by the Dragoons.

The major story arc, is the political infighting amongst Dragoon staff, as their major rebuilding post Luthien, has created a less homogeneous unit. The major factions are the older members, and their loyalty to Jamie Wolf. The newer inner sphere born members of the dragoons, and the dragoon born trubirths, raised in sibko's and with less of an attachment to the general ideals more common in the inner sphere. This has a few elements, but is punctuated by a play for power by Elson Novacat, who attempts to use Alpin wolf to take command of the Dragoons from Jamie Wolf.

The novel includes four major sub plots.

The longest running is the relationship between Brian Cameron and Maeve Wolf. Brian is smitten with Maeve when they first meet, but struggles to make time with her as they are posted to different regiments.

The second is the feud between Jamie Wolf and Takashi Kurita. This leads to Jamie traveling to the combine and re-uniting with the children of the Kurita units trained with the dragoons decades earlier prior to the split between the combine and the dragoons, and the battle of Misery.

A related sub plot is the death of Takashi Kurita in mysterious circumstances.

The final sub plot is the mystery of Maeve's origins.
