History[edit]

The unit which became known as the Gray Gunny Lancers had very humble beginnings, as a single lance of 'Mechs and half a platoon of tanks cobbled together with salvage just weeks before the Blackout, on 7 August 3132. The unit's commander, Evan Blackford, took a garrison contract in an unknown planet once the original merc command fled the system, but during their stay there, they uncovered a top secret weapons research facility operated by Bannson Universal Unlimited, containing highly volatile Word of Blake technology. Despite being inoperable, it could have birthed a gross imbalance in the battlefields across the Inner Sphere. Knowing than Jacob Bannson would stop at nothing to recover it and hunt the Lancers, they happily accepted a contract by the Republic of the Sphere Knight Janella Lakewood, giving them assignments than will keep them on the move, ahead of Bannson's bounty hunters, even after burying the technology. Since then, the Lancers became Lakewood's personal Black Ops unit, specilizing in hot-jumping: creating caos in any in-progres battle, causing disruption making swift striker and withdraw from combat, apparently unfazed by any losses suffered during the fighting. One of their more unusual rules of engagement is their willingness to sacrifice 'Mechs to save infantry. This ensured than they retain highly effective and specialized infantry, including snipers, covert operatives, battle-armor troopers and field-repair techs.[1]

The Battle of Terra found them stationed on Terra. They were deployed in Toledo, Luisville and Anchorage. They first known engagement was on Alaska: the also mercenary Hansen's Roughriders opposed the Clan Wolf landings there, but a Wolf counterattack put the mercenaries trapped against a cliff. It was then when the Lancers attacked Beta Galaxy (Clan Wolf), toring into his flanks, diving into the fray with a seemingly reckless disregard for their own lifes, attacking Wolf 'Mechs apparently at random and dashing to a new target. The Wolves attempted to wipe out the Lancers' infantry platoons, but their 'Mechs protected them. The Wolves launched head hunting attacks, in vain, unable to identify the Lancers' commanders.[2]

Eventually, when night had fell, a Wolf Stormwolf infiltrated into the Lancers' lines and engaged a Grand Summoner into a savage duel, which made nearby combatants to stop fighting and watch the duel play out. When the Grand Summoner fell, the Lancers retreated with the Roughriders: the dead warrior was Evan Blackford itself. Both units boarded their newly departed DropShips and departed. The Lancers' intervention had saved the Roughriders and caused heavy losses to the Wolves. A few Lancers were captured by the Wolves, revealing Evan's identity, but the status of the rest of the unit during the rest of the battle or after is unknown.[3]
