Green Knight

Overview[edit]

The Green Knight was an identity used by a noble family in the Lyran Commonwealth, a persona apparently assumed by several people over time (akin to the famous Bounty Hunter) rather than an individual person. Traditionally a woman, the Green Knight has reportedly fought Clan Ghost Bear in the Rasalhague Dominion, hunted pirates on Butte Hold, assaulted Tharkad during the Jihad, and accompanied Devlin Stone into the Blake Protectorate. In the Dark Age the Green Knight was on All Dawn assisting the Timbuktu Collective against raids by the Rim Collection.[1]

According to the original (apocryphal) write-up in TCI Model Set #5 — Archer & Crusader, the Green Knight was a female MechWarrior, associated with House Steiner and active in the late Succession Wars era.

Piloting an ARC-2R Archer painted green with black trim, she took part in Operation Crusader, a Steiner punitive raid against pirate king Redjack Ryan on his base world of Butte Hold. During the fighting she hid her 'Mech near the expected new site of Redjack's field HQ in a location identified as the Sahara II desert. The HQ was defended only by Redjack Ryan's cousin Angus Ryan in a CRD-3D Crusader. The Green Knight killed Angus Ryan, but he in turn managed to destroy her Archer with a final missile, thereby saving the HQ. As the smoke cleared, Steiner 'Mechs appeared for recovery, and one downed aerospace pilot from Ryan's forces named Ridley who had witnessed the fight decided to withdraw from the area. The Green Knight's body was never found, and she was rumored to be on the prowl again afterwards.[2]

Although no timestamp is given for Operation Crusader, context suggests it must have taken place during Redjack Ryan's reign on Butte Hold that lasted from 3018 to ca. 3050 (though his realm was merged into the Greater Valkyrate in late 3028). It was noted as of ca. 3025 that no government dared move against him because of the many hostages he held, suggesting the punitive raid that was Operation Crusader took place early on, closer to 3018 than to 3025. It may have been a direct response to the Fianna massacre that led to Ryan setting up shop on Butte Hold in the first place.
