Hell's Highway is a short story by James Hauser that was published in the eleventh issue of Shrapnel and shows a race of the Mad Stampede by Clan Hell's Horses.

Plot summary[edit]
Rafeny, a Trueborn of Clan Hell's Horses, was on the Vestred Stables on Csesztreg, mounting a unicorn stallion, during a special assignment. He suffered a fall, but without being injured. The stablemaster invited him to eat with his family, and he accepted, being impressed of how welcoming was the man's family. Eleven years later, Rafeny was in the Lauren Bourjon, preparing himself to participate into a Mad Stampede into Denizli, a planet held by Clan Jade Falcon. With his crew, they debated what strategy to follow to the race. The Jade Falcon garrison commander, Clarence Pride, debated the Horses' raid with his officers, deciding to face them with light and fast 'Mechs. Meanwhile, the race began, with each pair of hovertanks deciding the route to take. The balaoverdes, a floating plat, hid the Horses' tanks from satellites, but a crew was slaughtered by grunes, small and aggresive animals. And a day later, local birds downed so much balaoverdes than the Horses were finally located by the Falcons. Harassed by Falcon's VTOLs and light 'Mechs, the Horses' racers began suffering losses. Kerbit, a fanatical Falcon follower of the Mongol Doctrine, obsessed with hunt some Horses, pushed his 'Mech over all his limits and crashed, blowing with his 'Mech. Rafeny's Epona was damaged by a Falcon's 'Mech, losing the race. They made bondsman the warrior and boarded their DropShip, finding than they've lost the race. After the DropShip took off, Rafeny, knowing than their loss at the race won't made him added to the The Book of Barding, talked with one of his crew, telling her than he will try to secure his genetic legacy having sons with some lower caste woman.
