The massive Mjolnir, the largest WarShip to be produced in the Inner Sphere since the original Star League, started life intended as a light cruiser. When the Lyran half of the Federated Commonwealth seceded, Lyran commanders realized that they needed a ship to face down the new Avalon-class ships being produced by their former allies. The plans for the Mjolnir were revised, resulting in the ship seen here and providing a major morale boost to the Lyran navy by being able to produce a fearsome WarShip capable of facing down almost any vessel in existence.
Literally blistering with weaponry, the Mjolnir carries some of the heaviest weaponry available to a WarShip. The forward facing bays alone out-gun many other cruisers and every arc carries vast arrays of Naval PPC and Naval Autocannons. The main punch of the Mjolnir, however, comes from the Heavy Naval Gauss canons mounted fore and aft. The largest and deadliest weapon ever produced for a WarShip, the Heavy Naval Gauss can reach out thousands of kilometers and breach the armor of most smaller vessels in a single strike. The Mjolnir can use these weapons to cripple, if not outright destroy, opposing vessels while using its massive transit engines to close within range of its numerous Naval Autocannons to finish the job. Finally, a smattering of conventional weapons, combined with the ship's own 36 fighters, work to keep all but the largest of fighter groups from getting too close.
All this weaponry would be for naught if the Mjolnir were not able to protect itself, and designers ensured that she is the most heavily armored vessel operated by the Great Houses and is surpassed only by Clan Ghost Bear's Leviathan II. A staggering 3500 tons of Ferro-Carbide armor cover the Mjolnir's frame and has proven its worth in the Jihad as the LAS Fylgia survived combat over Alarion, where it slipped its moorings, and escaped Blakist assaults over Skye where it was struck by a nuclear warhead along with conventional fire, and again over Tharkad as the LAAF finally managed to free their capital.
The Mjolnir's interplanetary drives are also of note, not only for their size but how the LAAF managed to produce them in the first place. Since the early 3050s, ComStar provided WarShip engines to the Great Houses, but when the Word of Blake took Terra they stopped the practice. This sent the Houses madly searching for an alternate source. The Alliance, long a industrial powerhouse, simply commissioned the factories within its borders to make the engines piecemeal. Although difficult to coordinate and incredibly expensive, the process worked and allowed the Mjolnir’s engines to reach final assembly at the Port Sydney Yards orbiting Alarion. The engines have an incredible thrust-to-weight ratio and are able to push the Mjolnir at a staggering 3 Gs, almost unheard of for such a massive vessel. This speed is key to the Mjolnir’s success however as some of the ship's deadliest weaponry has only limited range.
