Obsidian Harvest Corporation was a Free Worlds League mining corporation.[1]

History[edit]

During the Third Succession War, the Obsidian Harvest Corporation pensioned the protectionist Minister of Trade to provide the company a Free Worlds League Parliament-backed exclusive fixed-rate mining contract on the League world of Amity to what was believed to be a modest patch of rare earth minerals located in the harsh deserts along the planet's equatorial line. Much to the surprise of Obsidian as anybody else, the vein turned out to be unexpectedly rich with the ore extracted of much higher quality than anticipated, drawing the attention of traders from the Lyran Commonwealth.[1]

Chafing at the now restrictive contract they had negotiated, when Lyran traders offered the Obsidian Harvest Corporation three times the market value to buy out OHC's full supply, the greedy company readily agreed, making little attempt to hide their change of allegiance to the Commonwealth. With the appalled League Parliament fully aware of their own involvement and the public relations disaster that would result from the revelation the ultra-nationalist Protectionist Minister of Trade had personally brokered a deal that ultimately resulted in the company providing material to an enemy House, the Free Worlds League Military was charged with quickly and quietly dealing with the matter.[1]

Believing an outsider would be less problematic and a more deniable choice, a League representative hired a small mercenary unit to launch what would appear to be a normal and mundane planetary raid against Amity, performing a surgical strike to cripple Obsidian's communication relays to prevent the company from realizing the League was preparing to deal with them. Despite the successful destruction of the communications relays, Obsidian suspected the true nature of the strike.[1]

Unfortunately for the League, this action led the now increasingly desperate company to escalate matters to save themselves, threatening to publicly reveal the initial deal while hunkering down at their primary mining site and hiring the Homer's Hooligans outfit to try to ward off a military strike. Unwilling to be blackmailed by a two-bit mining company, the League activated the local Marik Militia forces on Amity supported by the mercenaries to attack and forcibly arrest the company's board of directors.[1]

Despite the dug-in Homer's Hooligans preparations and artillery emplacements, the Militia and mercenaries succeeded in overwhelming Obsidan's defenders. With the defeat of the Hooligans, infantry forces of the Marik Militia were now able to penetrate Obsidian's facilities and capture the now crestfallen board of directors and deal with their betrayal. Officially, the Free Worlds League would claim the Obsidian Harvest Corporation had been all but destroyed by a marauding mercenary force in a tragic day for free enterprise in the League, making no mention of the true version of events and burying the mercenary's involvement under a non-disclosure agreement.[1]
