Payback Strike is a short story by David Stier that was published in the fourteenth issue of Shrapnel.
Plot summary[edit]
On the planet Apollo, Jack Tenny, member of the local resistance, follows a lance of Clan Jade Falcon 'Mechs. He was filled with rage for the Falcon's killing of his fathers and wife, and determined to obtain payback. He informed his sister Jenna, on the insurgent's secret airfield, and as the Falcons were approaching dangerously, she orders an air attack against the Clanners. The fight cost the insurgents four fighters, and another was damaged. They were unable to down a single Falcon 'Mech, but damaged two, and force them to retreat. Jake refused to let them go and advanced the retreating Falcons. On a razed town, he awaits them to come and made a sniper attack. Thanks to the fighters' damage, Jake succeed in killing the Falcon Star Captain which led the planetary garrison, and also five infantryman more. Thanks to a distraction provided by his sisters' fighter, Jake escapes, determined to live to fight another day.
