Russell Murphy was a MechWarrior from the Third Confederation Reserve Cavalry.[1]

Russell Murphy was born in Old Kentucky. He was raised as a gang fighter and took part in numerous street wars until he had to enlist to escape the wrath of rival gangs.
Joining as an infantryman, his years of urban warfare made him an excellent close quarters fighter, and aggressive enough to learn and attempt anti-BattleMech tactics.
He was assigned to the rebuilt Third Confederation Reserve Cavalry where he quickly rose to the position of squad leader. When a civil uprisings supported by mercenary BattleMechs threatened Denbar in 3059, his squad assisted in two BattleMech kills. For his actions he earned a commendation for valor, which he utilized to gain acceptance in the MechWarrior Training Program.
When the Third Reserve Cavalry shed their infantry support to create a Home Guard Regiment for Denbar, Murphy was elevated to a MechWarrior position and given a place within the Third Company's Reconnaissance lance, and his first taste of combat he earned his call sign Bulldog. In that fight he beat with his Raven an Enforcer, after being able to shot against his read armor.
When Arthur Chin created his lance, Youling Zhanshi, he was assigned as weapons master.[1]
When in 3068 the Third Confederation Reserve Cavalry came under fire and were still very much in the process or replacement and reorganization even once they reached their posting on Homestead, they faced a massive incursion of Federated Suns forces, the commanders of the Third CRC found their communications network disrupted, and in many cases neutralized. In the first hours of the attack, the Third CRC made a decision to abort its structure and splinter down to individual lance-sized elements. Of all these roaming lances, Youling Zhanshi, Chin's Lance, served with the most prominence. He was instrumental in developing the strategy used by the Third Confederation Reserve Cavalry and showed remarkable intuition in finding the best times and places to strike at invading forces. Time and again the unit struck at occupying forces.[2]
His unit was contacted by Death Commando Jason Zaklan, also present on planet and Chin's lance supported Zaklan in his operations.[3]
