Solomon Gaines was the commanding officer of the Nineteenth Marik Militia as of 2787.[1]

Colonel Gaines commanded the Nineteenth Marik Militia during the Free Worlds League's First Succession War offensive into the Capellan Confederation. Landing on Corey in July 2787 alongside Vitka Ramone's Twentieth Marik Militia, Gaines' forces faced off against the entrenched Tenth Confederation Reserve Cavalry and elements of Hollis Incorporated's security forces in the capital city of Valasha. After a brief battle for the city's spaceport lead to an abrupt retreat of the Capellan forces, Gaines began to suspect a trap and requested heavy aerial reconnaissance before committing his men to a ground push. When his recon flight came under heavy missile fire from Hollis Inc.'s defenses, Gaines ordered an orbital strike that transformed Valasha's commercial district into a burning crater.[1]
When Gaines' troops finally moved into the city, the remaining Tenth Reserve cavalrymen only put up a token resistance before the city and the planet were claimed for the Free Worlds League. However, both Gaines and Ramone grew concerned as after-action reports and recovery efforts revealed that many of the Reserve Cavalry's BattleMechs were not accounted for in the destruction of the city or the defeat of the surviving defenders.[1]
The truth soon became clear, as the remaining Tenth Reserve BattleMechs began a heated resistance movement that required numerous months and the aid of the Third Marik Militia to destroy. After the Fourth Fusiliers of Oriente arrived in December to relieve Gaines' troops for further attacks, the Capellans completed their plan by ambushing and destroying the League's naval forces in the system, trapping Gaines' allies on Corey.[1]
