Vanora Lindell was a Marian Hegemony citizen who rose to the patrician class within Marian society.[1]

Lindell was a celebrated privateer at the beginning of the thirty-first century who earned considerable income and spoils during her spacefaring career.[1]
The inhabitants of the Hegemony fell into three classes: patrician, pleb, and slave. Class was passed from parent to child unless steps were taken to change it. Patricians were those who owned land and wealthy plebs could become patricians by buying land; however, by the start of the thirty-first century, all viable real estate in the Hegemony had been bought and developed, which allowed for virtually no upward movement.[1]
Belonging to the pleb class, Vanora Lindell purchased two square meters of unusable land in the Addhara Wastelands desert to legally gain patrician status. This was not an option for most plebs because such land buys offered no income in which to sustain the patrician lifestyle, but for Lindell, income from her patch was the last thing she needed. In doing this, she made a mockery of the system and cast a spotlight on the legal frictions granting patrician status through the purchase of unusable land.[1]
Imperator Marius O'Reilly recognized this reality when he authored the Declaration Concerning Patricianship that officially made patrician membership strictly hereditary. It passed by a fifty-one percent vote in the Senate in 3013.[1]
