History[edit]

The Wayward Son was an Merchant-class independent JumpShip, but which had plied its trade in the Federated Suns space for generations. Unfortunately, he was surprised on New Avalon jump points when the Draconis Combine invaded it during the Battle of New Avalon (3146). The ship was taken as spoils of war, and though it retained its original crew, only was allowed to continue operating under the auspices of the Combine Navy. His captain Charles Trass and XO Anatole Russell didn't like it, but had to obey. The ship was again on New Avalon system the 17 May 3151, when what appeared to be an invading Federated Suns' fleet appeared. Following their previous instructons, they executed an emergency jump to Coloma, also under Combine control.[1]

However, after reaching their destination, on Coloma's nadir Jump point, they found another Federated Suns' fleet. They were contacted by Admiral McMasters, of the Federated Suns' Navy, which informed them they were under her authority and had to surrender. The captain argued with her, but after she promised than they will be released after making a simple trip for the Suns, Trass submitted and swear her his cres' loyalty to the Suns, before ordering Russell to go to receive the boarding Suns' marines.[1]

McMasters' raid was what she called Operation Umbra, a prelude to Operation DAWN, the liberation of New Avalon, so the Wayward Son must have carried troops from Argyle to New Avalon, where the fleet arrived the 17 May, a campaign which retook the Suns' capital.[2]
