Character History

Early Life and Career

Alessandro Steiner was born in 2967 on Furillo. and inherited the Archonship in 2980 after his father, Giovanni Steiner, died in an equestrian accident. Prior to his father's death he was a battalion commander in the 2nd Royal Guards. Upon becoming Archon, he immediately increased the amount of revenue that went to the military, which caused concern among the common folk. In 2987 he ordered the "Deep Raid", an attack on the Marik 'Mech factory on Ling. Though this mission was successful, the high command was furious because after the raid, the exhausted attacking force was sent to attack five more worlds before returning. Despite this they did nothing as the public considered the attack a success.

Battles of Hesperus

In 2997, the Archon decided to attack the Marik world of Kalidasa where some important 'Mech facilities were located. This offensive required three of the five regiments which were supposed to be guarding Hesperus II. As the Kalidasa offensive bogged down, Marik scout units discovered that Hesperus was undermanned and sent an attack in force. The Eridani Light Horse, disobeying the orders of the Lyran commander, deployed their outnumbered forces in the mountains and managed to crush the attackers in the tight terrain.

The Steiner high command were shaken by how close they came to losing Hesperus, and asked Alessandro to pull back the forces from Kalidasa. Their pleas fell on deaf ears. In 3000, the Combine sent three regiments to attack Hesperus. This offensive was only halted by the actions of the Eridani Light Horse, who held the enemy so that Steiner regiments could reinforce the planet. Because of this debacle which cost them dearly, the Light Horse chose not to renegotiate their contract which expired later that year. They departed to the Federated Suns, much to the disappointment of many Lyrans.

Operation: Concentrated Weakness

In 3002, Alessandro began a plan known as "Concentrated Weakness". This involved moving garrison units from the interior of the Commonwealth to the Marik border to free up troops. In 3006 Marik turned this policy against the Lyrans by conducting deep raids which targeted worlds that had been stripped of their garrisons. With only old men and children to oppose them, the seasoned Marik warriors easily destroyed several military industries.

This loss convinced Alessandro's niece, General Katrina Steiner, to openly declare her intention to become Archon. She had many supporters, who increased in number after the military reversals suffered due to Alessandro's policies. Before the Archon could do anything about his niece, he was summoned by the Estates General who after a ferocious debate unanimously voted for a petition of no confidence in Alessandro. Storming out of the Government House, he was then met by members of the high command. They attempted to reason with him, suggesting that he step down for the good of the Lyran Commonwealth. Surprised by this, he asked for a few days to think but in fact used that time to gather support. He found instead that no one was willing to back him.

Retirement

On July 22 3007 Alessandro Steiner "retired" in favor of Katrina Steiner after losing the support of the Estates General, the Lyran public, and the high command. Following that, he attempted multiple assassination attempts on Katrina.

Alessandro has three known siblings, Hermann Steiner, Donna Steiner and Lisa Steiner
