The Deep Hunters were a mercenary unit employed by the LAAF. Signed to a three year contract to survey the Coreward Periphery and harass Clan shipping, they returned to Lyran space in late 3062 and found themselves in one of the first battles of the Federated Commonwealth's Civil War on Newtown Square.
History[edit]
The Deep Hunters have an unknown history, but the Hunters' aerospace pilots were well known as elite: most being LAAF veterans and experienced raiding pirates, bandits, and the Clans.
FedCom Civil War[edit]
Shortly after the unit's return to known space, the fighting on Kathil and Prince Victor's broadcast from Mogyorod had sparked the long simmering war. Rather than await the first volley from pro-Victor Thirty-Ninth Avalon Hussars, Harald Guntz instead ordered his aerospace fighters to a surprise first strike operation against the Hussars' command and communications on 21 December 3062. The Colonel also made a strategic blunder, not aware the Hussars' one assigned fighter wing could also call upon the three other planetary independent wings.
His plan to lead the 'Mech battalion to the capital and call for assistance from the Loyalist Fourteenth Donegal Guards also quickly fell apart. The commander of the Thirty Ninth, Major General Bella Bragg easily brushed the mercenary ground forces aside with her entire RCT as the overhead battle raged. The Deep Hunter pilots acquitted themselves well, but faced 2:1 odds while earning comparisons to the Great Lee Turkey Shoot in the brutal fight. The Hunters eventually lost the battle, reducing the four Allied aerospace wings to only three squadrons.[1]
The mercenaries scattered over the planet. They were successful, though, in alerting Adam Steiner's Fourteenth Donegal, leading to the first close-call of the nascent "Civil" War for Victor. The Guards arrived nearly three months later, springing a trap for the ex-Prince and nearly ending the rebellion.[2]
