History[edit]

The Edmund Davion was a Davion II-class destroyer in service with the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns as the FSS Edmund Davion during the First Succession War. In May 2788, the Edmund Davion was deployed as an escort for the First Davion Guards alongside a sister ship, the FSS Duke Henry, in a counterattack in the Cartago system led by First Prince John Davion. Cartago had been captured by the Draconis Combine during the mass invasion of the Federated Suns that began in May 2787, and the attack on Cartago was one of three major attacks taking place under Operation SOLAR SHIELD, an attempt by Prince John to disrupt the invasion by attacking on the Terran flank of the invasion route, targeting in particular the front being led by Coordinator Minoru Kurita personally.[1][2]

The AFFS force was supported from armor and infantry forces drawn from regional militias within the Marlette Combat Region, and the Guards were able to land on Cartago largely unopposed, other than a brief skirmish with a pair of Baron-class destroyers above the planet. Thinking that they had the upper hand, the Guards were nearly lured into a trap at the spaceport near the capital city - but Prince John spotted that something was wrong, and managed to fall back with most of his troops before the nuclear weapon waiting for them could claim more than a few of the Guards and their aerospace fighter escort as victims.[1][2]

As the Guards attempted an orderly retreat from Cartago the two Barons launched a fresh attack on the Duke Henry and Edmund Davion, this time in concert with a Narukami II-class destroyer, the DCS Omodaka, tipping the edge in their favor. Whilst Combine aerospace fighters strafed the AFFS DropShips, the Omodaka and the two Barons turned an orderly withdrawal back to the Guards JumpShips into a bloody pursuit that was only broken off after the two Davions destroyed the two Barons, with the Duke Henry being lost in the battle. The other major assaults of SOLAR SHIELD fared even more poorly for the AFFS, turning SOLAR SHIELD into an abject failure that cost the Federated Suns men, ships and resources it couldn't afford to lose.[1][2]
