Against the Spiders

Objective: Get to the inner arena and rescue Natalia.

Foster: Looks like they’re bringing out the welcoming committee. Assault ‘Mechs, en route.

Foster: Sir, let’s get in there, rescue the Major, and get off this hellhole!

Objective: Secure the arena.

Foster: Okay, sir. Take out those turrets. Then we can get that shield down and get out of here.

Reetu: Your Major needs you, MechWarrior. Are you strong enough to save her?

Objective: Prepare for the WOB’s attack.

Foster: I can’t believe they’re attacking a Blood Asp with scout ‘Mechs!

Reetu: Dragoons, those soldiers’ lives are forfeit. A modest sacrifice, to assure the Word’s ultimate success. This is the power of the Word. I will have what I want, and the galaxy will be mine!

Objective: Another wave is coming.

Reetu: I will rule this galaxy, or grind it to dust, and you are powerless to stop me.

Reetu: So, now that I have you trapped, my minion will destroy your outmoded ‘Mech and kill all of your own.

Foster: Sir, unidentified bogies. A lot of them. Readings are similar to that huge ‘Mech on Thestria, but… smaller? I’m reading core technologies. Yeah, there’s no doubt, these are smaller versions of that spider you faced earlier.

Reetu: Bravo, Lieutenant. But these are more dangerous, thanks to a trick we learned from your BattleArmor design. Do you think the Word of Blake can be stopped? Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Alert: NeuroHack in progress!! Neurohack defeated!

Foster: These spiders are showing multiple core technologies. I was right, they can be used together!

Reetu: As you can see, your little Foster is not the only one who can make a weapon out of data cores.

Foster: More spiders! A big group!

Objective: More spiders are inbound.

Reetu: You cannot defeat me or the least of my minions. If you surrender, I would let you live… on your knees!

Reetu: Mercenary, you would flock to my side if you only knew the glory of what I will bring.

Reetu: Enjoy your playtime with my servants, Dragoon. I really must thank you. Without your predictable loyalty to the Major, it would have been far more difficult to acquire the fifth core.

Alyra: MechWarrior, Foster, I found you! I’m here to help!

Foster: Help? We’ve had all the “help” we can take from you, Alyra.

Alyra: Listen, you don’t understand. You still need me.

Reetu: Dragoons, I now have what I came for. Enjoy your little victory. Soon, the entire Inner Sphere will be mine.

Natalia: Foster, MechWarrior, thank you, but don’t you know a damn trap when you see one? Alyra, you and I need to have a talk, now!

Alyra: Now hold on. Let me explain.

Natalia: What, your Word of Blake pals ditched you, so now you’re crawling back to us? You’d better explain yourself before we tie you to an engine.

Alyra: It’s not that simple. There’s much more going on here.

Natalia: Enlighten me. You have thirty seconds.

Alyra: If you can go thirty seconds without hitting me… All right. You know the data cores you’ve been stumbling across? They’re Blake’s legacy. ComStar’s legacy. Jerome Blake, founder of ComStar, he created the five data cores. When combined, he believed they would bring a new golden age to humanity. His gift to us all. But it was too powerful. He saw it in the eyes of his inner circle when he revealed his creation. He knew then that he could never trust that his gift wouldn’t be turned into a curse. He couldn’t bring himself to destroy them, and their promise, so he secretly scattered the cores across the Inner Sphere. For six centuries, there have been a select few that have kept and guarded this secret, but now, the Covenant is broken. The Word of Blake knows of the cores, and is plunging the Inner Sphere into war to seize them. The Word doesn’t intend to bring a new golden age; more like an iron fist. Jerome Blake’s worst fears, realized. They’re planning to use the cores to power a new ‘Mech army and, with that power, they’ll be unstoppable. That’s it. That’s all I know.

Natalia: So we’re supposed to believe that you’re some sort of secret ComStar agent and the Word of Blake is going to destroy the universe?

Alyra: Believe what you want. But if we don’t get to Terra and stop them, what you or I believe won’t matter.

Natalia: Foster, do you read me? Prepare the Icarus for immediate dustoff. We’re taking the Jezabel to Terra.
