History[edit]
In 2764, XXIII Corps was part of the Fifteenth Army, assigned to District 2 of the Draconis Combine Military Region. Assigned to garrison the border between the Draconis Combine and the Federated Suns, an area that was full of tensions, the XXIII Corps would rotate its forces through the region on a regular basis. This rotation of units allowed the XXIII Corps to supplement the patrols of the XXXIII Corps, which was the only unit assigned to the border from Third Army. XXIII Corps was headquartered on Capra.[2]
Despite the frequent action along the border, XXIII Corps commander Major General Tamara Polaski would frequently accompany the Eighty-fourth Light Horse Regiment to visit the various garrison locations of the divisions under her command. When they arrived, the Eighty-fourth and the host division would engage in wargames. General Polaski then spent a month with the host division's staff reviewing the exercise's results. This insured that each division was both up to strength, tactically sound, and familiar with what their Corps commander expected them to do in case of emergency.[2]
XXIII Corps, like all units of the Fifteenth Army, couldn't draw on many local Combine military manufacturers. The XXIII Corps had an advantage however, in that it was garrisoning the area contested during Operation SMOTHER. This allowed the Corps to use the SLDF resupply facilities installed to support that operation. The largest of these facilities was on Benet III, and the XXIII Corps took possession of 'Mechs and armor produced on Marduk, Hun Ho, and Luthien.[2]
Periphery Uprising[edit]
When the simmering violence and rebellion building in the Periphery erupted in 2765, XXIII Corps was deployed to the Outworlds Alliance along with the rest of the Fifteenth Army.[1][3] XXIII Corps took significant losses in the Periphery Uprising; not only were the 106th Mechanized Infantry Division and 199th BattleMech Division lost in combat, but the 284th BattleMech Division took such heavy losses that it was disbanded in 2766, with elements of the division having joined the Periphery rebels.
Amaris Civil War[edit]
The Hegemony Campaign claimed more of XXIII Corps, with the Seventy-third Mechanized Infantry Division and the Twenty-ninth Infantry Division lost in combat along with the independent 189th Light Horse Regiment. The Sixty-third Mechanized Infantry Division also took heavy losses in the campaign; by 2784, the division had been disbanded, with elements of the division joining the Free Worlds League and Lyran Commonwealth.[1]
When General Aleksandr Kerensky led the bulk of the SLDF on the Exodus in 2784, the majority of XXIII Corps chose to follow him. The exception to this was the Eighty-fourth Light Horse Regiment, which signed on with the Capellan Confederation.[1]
