Acceptable Losses is a short story by Adam Neff that was published in the thirteenth issue of Shrapnel.
Plot summary[edit]
Red Stables MechWarrior Zarek Hanlon, is urgently awakened in the early hours of the morning and mobilized by Corporal Amata Singh, A suspected pirate DropShip is inbound and likely to raid the DuraPaq Solutions pwned DropShip service depot the unit is assigned to guard. Captain Dvorak, emphasizes than the unit must protect the company's holdings, Zarek is assigned to cover the unit's flank. A lone pirate 'Mech attacks the city of Cide Unidas instead of the expected depot. Concerned about the inhabitants Zarek ignores his orders and races to stop the 'Mech. After a long chase in which the city suffers severe damage, Zarek manages to down the pirate 'Mech. Returning to his unit, finding the rest of the lance crushed and the pirates having departed, leaving Corporal Singh dead. Dvorak furious with Zarek's disobedience, discharges him from the unit. Zarek finds than he has also been permanently blacklisted by DuraPat Solutions. However, a receptionist shows his gratitude for saving his family telling him where he can store his 'Mech and where to search for work.
