Alhena II - more commonly referred to simply as Alhena - is the second planet of four in the Alhena system.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Alhena is a world that travels between two suns via an eccentric orbit. This orbit leads to long winters and short summers. The lack of arable land on the surface and a lack of free water on the surface meant that Alhena's residents needed to import most of their food. The importance of trade for the population cannot be overemphasized: during the Jihad Alhena's trade was so badly disrupted that nearly ten percent of the world's population starved to death during the long winter.[1]

First Succession War[edit]

Alhena was one of a number of Lyran Commonwealth worlds captured by the Free Worlds League between 2786 and 2790, as the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces began to crack under the pressure of continuing efforts to annex the Bolan Thumb while also attempting to maintain a defensive posture against both the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery and the Free Worlds League Military.[55]

At the beginning of 2804 the Free Worlds League was engaged in a planetary assault on Alhena; Fleet Admiral Thaddeus Marik, son of Captain-General Kenyon Marik, was supervising the assault personally with his flagship, the Lola III-class destroyer FWLS Bucharest, in the system. It was while Thaddeus was overseeing the final attack against the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces defenders that he received word of the death of his father, and the news that the Free Worlds League Parliament was calling a session to discuss candidates to assume the post of Captain-General. Within hours of the surviving LCAF personnel escaping from Alhena, three days after the news had arrived, Thaddeus left by shuttle to board the Bucharest and journey back to Atreus as quickly as possible.[16]

The Dark Age[edit]

Shortly after the world was inducted into the Republic of the Sphere, scientists detected several instabilities in the smaller, innermost sun. These instabilities are reminiscent of other stars that have gone nova. As a result, the Alhenan government has drafted a series of evacuation plans in case the worst comes to pass and the star does explode.[1]

During the mid-3140s the Wolf Empire launched an attack on Alhena, in which Clan Wolf forces replicated tactics the forces of the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth used when attempting to fight off the invasion by the Wolf forces a little while earlier; the Wolf units deployed Xiphos Assault Battle Armor squads a few hundred meters behind the defending forces, with orders to savage the artillery supporting the defenders. The only factor that prevented the tactic from being a complete success was the relative inexperience of the Wolf Empire forces - without that, the Remnant forces would have suffered a major defeat.[56]
