Bard Tsongas was raised to the post of Galaxy Commander of the so-called second-line "freeborn" Zeta Galaxy prior to Operation REVIVAL and the activation of the Steel Vipers as a reserve Clan. Zeta Galaxy was selected to take part in the Battle of Tukayyid in place of the front-line Beta Galaxy as an insult to the defending Com Guards and to earn the Vipers a earlier landing, the Viper Khans only intending to use Tsongas' troops to defend the drop zones and supply trains. After the Alpha and Gamma Galaxies expended almost all their munitions to obliterate the Sixth and Seventy-Eighth Divisions, the fresh troops of Zeta Galaxy were called forward to support and escort the massed Viper forces out of the hellish Devil's Bath.[2] [3] [4]
With the Com Guards waiting for them on the hills overlooking the Kozice Valley, saKhan Perigard Zalman was forced to request aid from Tsongas' reserve galaxy to prevent his force from collapsing. Galled to watch the "freebirth" troops of Zeta succeed where his own warriors failed, as the Com Guard forces began to push the Vipers back, a wounded Zalman convinced Khan Natalie Breen to order a general withdrawal back to the landing zone. Bard Tsongas was incensed, had the fresh troops of Zeta been allowed to lead the advance, the Vipers likely would have taken their primary target city of Kozice Ranch Station despite the losses they had taken, but ultimately ordered his troops to pull back. A bitter Tsongas made the mistake of speaking his mind on an open comm channel, publicly fingering the Steel Viper Khans as the cause for his Clan's defeat on Tukayyid, a decision that result in his execution for treason.[1][5][6]
