The title of Earl of Sherwood is a noble title granted to the nominal ruler of the planet Sherwood. The title was created during the First Succession War, when the First Prince of the Federated Suns formally recognized the title of "earl", which had been granted to Major General Jonas Tyler, Commanding Officer of the Star League Defense Forces 132nd Royal Jump Infantry Division, by the ruling body of Sherwood in 2765.[1]
Jonas and his command had become popular heroes on Sherwood after their successful defeat in 2763 of a Taurian Concordat-backed pirate unit known as the Titanium Blade, which had been plaguing Sherwood for almost a century; when Jonas married Yulia Flyntham - daughter of one of the local barons - in 2765 the Court of Elders named Jonas an "earl" of the Court. Sherwood was a representative democracy at the time, with each major settlement appointing a baron to the Court of Elders, and the Court ruled Sherwood. When the 132nd was disbanded following heavy losses and brutal combat inside the Taurian Concordat during the Periphery Uprising, Jonas and some of the other survivors of the division returned to Sherwood and settled there, passing their equipment to the local militia and founding a new militia unit. The formal recognition of the title of Earl by the First Prince and the subsequent enrolment of Jonas and Yulia's children in military academies on New Avalon and New Syrtis led to the virtual certainty that those children would be named to the Court of Elders. However, the Court chose to preempt this by amending the planetary constitution; Sherwood became a crowned republic, with the Tyler family representing Sherwood abroad and performing ceremonial duties, but holding just a single vote on the Court of Elders.[1]

- Although Jonas Tyler was the first "Earl of Sherwood" and was declared an earl of the Court of Elders in 2765, the title of Earl for the nominal planetary ruler wasn't established until at some point during the First Succession War, the exact date of which has yet to be confirmed.[1]
- Jonathan Tyler has been confirmed as being the Earl of Sherwood at the start of the Jihad in 3067, but is implied to have been the Earl for an unspecified period of time before that date, having led the planetary militia unit Tyler's Terrors during the FedCom Civil War in support of Victor Steiner-Davion.[1]
