K. Madeline Schroeder was a trivid journalist working for the Donegal Broadcasting Company in 3128.

History[edit]

K. Madeline Schroeder, or simply "Maddie," was assigned by the DBC to cover the thousandth anniversary celebration for the Second Donegal Guards in 3128. While she regretted being assigned to what she saw as a puff piece, she regarded the assignment as a stepping stone to covering more serious news. Upon arriving at a reception for the unit, she met a trio of Hauptmanns: Greta Wellington, Greydon Brewer-Shaw and Naseem Mehyar. The group spotted her while Mehyar was mocking Hauptmann-General Fredrick Hogarth, who was among the attendees of the event. He attempted to defuse the situation, but Maddie assured him there was no need. Greta later proposed that Maddie join her in the anniversary parade the following day, to which Maddie accepted.[1]

Maddie watched the speeches preceding the event from a perch in a Gauntlet directly above the main stage, and was still riding with Greta when Clan Jade Falcon attacked. Maddie attempted to put on a brave face, saying she had always dreamed of doing war reporting, and recorded much of the fight from over Greta's shoulder. Maddie was knocked unconscious in the fall when Greta was killed by a Falcon MechWarrior, and found herself unable to reach the canopy hatch when she regained consciousness, as the OmniMech had fallen on its back. An Elemental began to breach the cockpit, but fortunately for her, it was not a Jade Falcon, but rather Exiled Wolf Khan Patrik Fetladral. Though he told her to stay put and wait for rescue, Maddie recognized the 'Mech belonging to the Guards' commander, Arnaud Zardetto, and went to confront him.[1]

Demanding an explanation from the officer, Zardetto told her that he had orders from the highest echelons that the event go on as originally planned, and that he had attempted to minimize casualties wherever possible. When she said she would fight the narrative that the Commonwealth was putting out about the event, Zardetto told her that the Archon was extremely interested in the contents of her story. He offered her his card, and while she wanted to decline, the fear of being retaliated against by such a powerful figure led her to accept the implied collaboration.[1]
