Welcome[edit]

Welcome, Beemer, to BattleTechWiki!

We look forward to your contributions and want to help you get off to a good strong start. Hopefully you will soon join the army of BattleTech Editors! If you need help formatting the pages, visit the manual of style. For general questions go to the Help section or the FAQ. If you can't find your answer there, please ask an Admin.

Additional tips
Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the wiki:

  • For policies and guidelines, see The Five Core Policies of BattleTechWiki and the BTW Policies. Another good place to check out is our market of Projects, to see how the smaller communities within BTW do things in their particular niche areas.
  • Each and every page (articles, policies, projects, images, etc.) has its very own discussion/talk page, found on the tab line at the top of the page. This is a great place to find out what the community is discussing along that subject and what previous issues have already been solved.
  • If you want to play around with your new wiki skills, the Sandbox is for you. Don't worry: you won't break anything. A great resource for printing out is the Wiki Cheat Sheet.
  • If you're not registered, then please consider doing so. At the very least, you'll have a UserPage that you own, rather than sharing one with the community.
  • Also consider writing something about yourself on your UserPage (marked as "Beemer" at the top of the page, though only do this if you're registered). You'll go from being a 'redshirt' to a 'blueshirt,' with the respect of a more permanent member.
    • This is really helpful for the admins, as it gives your account that touch of "humanity" that assists us in our never-ending battle with spambots.
  • For your first few edits on the wiki, please do not add any URLs (which can be an indicator of SPAM).
  • Consider introducing yourself on our Discord server.
  • In your Preferences, under the edit tab, consider checking Add pages I create to my watchlist and Add pages I edit to my watchlist, so that you can see how your efforts have affected the community. Check back on following visits by clicking on watchlist.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random button in the sidebar, or check out the List of Wanted Pages. Or even go to Special Pages to see what weird stuff is actually tracked by this wiki.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~) or by clicking on the circled button in this image; this will automatically produce your name (or IP address, if you are editing anonymously) and the date.

Again, welcome to Sarna's BattleTechWiki!

Personal Welcome[edit]

Welcome indeed to our little self-help group here! Looking forward to your contributions. If you have any questions, ask. Please. We need more contributors and are thankful for all comers.

Also, a Leopard 1A5? Not even sure where you can legally get one. Or what the going price would be. But that sounds like a fun project. Good luck with that. ;) Frabby (talk) 01:53, 5 February 2021 (EST)

Hi Frabby, thank you for the welcome! I'm looking forward to helping out here for sure :-)
As for the Leopard 1A5, their former users have surplussed some, the main thing with tanks is them being de-milled so that the main gun is no longer functional. One needs deep pockets for one too. Not only do they tend to not cost less than $250,000 USD, a complete oil and coolant change costs around $1,000 USD! I just need to become a millionaire first. LOL! For now, though, I'm really enjoying my M35A3 - it's like driving a big pick-up truck :-) — The preceding unsigned comment was posted by Beemer (talkcontribs) 07:33, 5 February 2021‎ .

Ashley Watkins[edit]

Thank you for that complete refresh of the Ashley Watkins article. Seriously, it is one of the more interesting real-life people articles on here. Good job.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 19:05, 16 July 2022 (EDT)

Thank you for the kind words! Earlier this year I posted a thread on the BattleTech forums asking about former writers providing background on what they did for the TROs like how the current writers do for the Unit of the Week fan articles. It was there that Ashley came up as well as some 'mech design credits for Blaine Pardoe. I hope to add similar information to other writer articles on here.--Beemer (talk) 19:24, 16 July 2022 (EDT)
Please do. I had a similar idea, for interviews of long-past writers, for a "news" section on Sarna, but could never quite crystalize how I wanted to present it (or even find the writers). This article is a far more coherent presentation of what a writer would want to say to "us".--Revanche (talk|contribs) 21:56, 16 July 2022 (EDT)
As you probably saw from the history it took me a few tries yesterday to get it presentable. At the same time I was learning some more stuff about page editing as most of my edits before that were just spelling corrections. I know that in the past Sean interviewed IP contributors like Matt Plog as part of Sarna News. Do you think those interviews would be a good idea to include in the people pages? I'm not sure if the full text should go there or just a reference if there is none.--Beemer (talk) 07:44, 17 July 2022 (EDT)
The interviews are certainly acceptable; my suggestion is to mostly reference/re-write the information and use (sparingly) direct quotes. Your Watkins refresh was walking towards the line on the amount of direct quotes, but (IMO) was in no danger of crossing it.
As for editing, no worries. If you have anything that becomes too difficult to figure out on your own, pop on to the Discord server and ask (in either #wiki-questions or #wiki-issues) --Revanche (talk|contribs) 08:42, 17 July 2022 (EDT)
Is there a place on Sarna.net where we can keep the full text of interviews? One of my concerns is these information sources eventually disappearing, which is why I went into as much detail as I did with Ashley's page. I'd like to think that BTW will last longer than that :-)--Beemer (talk) 09:19, 17 July 2022 (EDT)
Easy answer: user subpages. To explain, your profile page is User:Beemer. If you put a / and a title after it, you get a user subpage.
Ex: User:Beemer/IndexOfInterviews
When you edit this page, you can see how I did that, as well.
Using this method, you can create any number of pages to work on projects not ready for prime time or even cache things for later.
Hope this helps. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 19:56, 17 July 2022 (EDT)

Rommel tank[edit]

I have removed the note you inserted in the Rommel tank entry, and I feel I owe you an explanation. To be clear, there was nothing technically wrong with the note. However, the issue seems to be a potential minefield. Given the odd way this was announced and the fact that nothing has actually changed in BattleTech canon, I feel the value of noting the (potential) issue isn't worth the potential trouble. Sarna should stay well clear of that debate, if there is going to be one. Or even a debate on wether there should be a debate. Which means that simply ignoring the issue (and thus, not highlighting it in the article) is the best way forward. Frabby (talk) 07:55, 6 November 2022 (EST)

Thank you for the explanation! I'll steer clear of noting that sort of thing next time I find something like that.--Beemer (talk) 17:23, 6 November 2022 (EST)
