Xao Zhiyi was, as of 3022, a Major in the Capellan Reserves on Bithinia.[1]

By 3022, Zhiyi was in his seventies, old and experienced. The commander of Bithinia's reserves, Zhiyi had fought many battles.[1]
In September 3022, Bithinia was raided by a mercenary unit, the Northstar Irregulars, hired by Free Worlds League noble Ezra Durrant. While an unnamed Colonel led the Bithinia Militia to chase diversion forces in outlying settlements, Zhiyi was left to guard Bithinia City proper. He took advantage of the terrain, turning the city into an armor-laden trap for the Irregulars. Under his leadership, three of the four Irregulars 'Mechs were disabled. Zhiyi offered Saul Trenton, mercenary commander, honors of war, securing a Capellan victory but denying the Colonel the glory of combat.[1]
