Description
The Atlas is probably the most well-known 'Mech to set foot on the modern battlefield. Originally designed after the Cameron Edicts were issued, the sole intent behind the Atlas was to ensure SLDF superiority over the Star League member states. The specifications were laid down by Aleksandr Kerensky himself; "a 'Mech as powerful as possible, as impenetrable as possible, and as ugly and foreboding as conceivable, so that fear itself will be our ally." With nineteen tons of Durallex Heavy Special armor, crippling firepower, and the foreboding skull shaped "Death's Head" cockpit/head assembly, the Atlas lives up to its reputation; even the mere sight of an Atlas has been known to make a veteran MechWarrior break out in a cold sweat.
Armament
The Atlas is armed with a multitude of weapons for both long and short range combat. For long ranges, the 'Mech carries a Doombud LRM-20 that allows it to fire both directly at an enemy target at long range and to give indirect fire support when needed. For close range combat, the 'Mech is armed with a Deathgiver Autocannon/20 and four Hellion-V Medium Lasers which can eviscerate any 'Mechs who dare to come into close combat range. Finally, to take advantage of weakened areas of an enemy's armor, the Atlas carries a Thunderstroke SRM-6 launcher.[1]
Variants
- AS7-C - A modification of the K model, the C model is intended to carry a C3 Slave unit into combat. This is achieved by removing one of the Medium Pulse Lasers from the K model. The extra free ton has been used to add another heat sink to the design. BV (1.0) = 1,650, BV (2.0) = 2,163
- AS7-CM - Another modification of the K model of the Atlas, the CM Atlas is designed to carry a C3 Master Computer into battle. In order to do this one of the ER Large Lasers has been removed and in its place a C3 Master computer has been installed, allowing it to coordinate a C3 lance. BV (1.0) = 1,725, BV (2.0) = 2,036
- AS7-K - An upgrade of the Atlas that uses rediscovered Star League technology, the K model is built with an XL Engine that reduces the weight of the engine by half. The 'Mech has been rearmed with some new weaponry. For long range combat, the 'Mech carries a Gauss Rifle and an LRM-20. These are backed up by a pair of ER Large Lasers, which allow the Atlas to keep an enemy at range, though the use of single heat sinks causes swift heat buildup if both lasers are fired repeatedly. For close range defense, the K model carries two Victory Heartbeat Medium Pulse Lasers and a Yori Flyswatter Anti-Missile System. Finally, CASE has been added to the side torsos to protect against an ammunition explosion. BV (1.0) = 1,649, BV (2.0) = 2,175
- AS7-K2 - The K2 model of the Atlas uses an Vlar XL Engine and increases its rating to 400, giving the K2 model a top speed of 64.8 km/h. The 'Mech is armed with a Dragon's Fire Gauss Rifle and two Victory Nickel Alloy ER Large Lasers for long-range combat. For close combat, the 'Mech carries two Guided Technologies 2nd Gen Streak SRM-6 launchers. Finally, to protect against advanced enemy electronics, the 'Mech has a Guardian ECM Suite. The K2 is also protected with sixteen and a half tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor. BV (1.0) = 1,751, BV (2.0) = 2,163
- AS7-K3 - A modification of the K2, the K3 removes the two Streak SRM-6 launchers and replaces them with three jump jets and a Streak SRM-4 launcher, giving the 'Mech incredible maneuverability. BV (1.0) = 1,952, BV (2.0) = 2,346
- AS7-S - A very basic upgrade of the standard Atlas, the S model removes five heat sinks from the design to add two rear firing Coventry T4H Streak SRM-2 launchers, giving the Atlas increased protection in its rear arc of fire. BV (1.0) = 1,658, BV (2.0) = 1,923
- AS7-S2 - The S2 Atlas is a major upgrade of the design by the Lyran Alliance. The 'Mech is built with a Light Fusion Engine and carries as its primary long range weapon an LRM-15 launcher with an Artemis IV Fire Control System for added accuracy. The 'Mech also carries two ER Large Lasers for added long range firepower. For close combat, the 'Mech is armed with a Heavy Gauss Rifle and to protect against enemy electronic warfare equipment the 'Mech has a Guardian ECM Suite. BV (1.0) = 2,147, BV (2.0) = 2,389
- AS7-D 3136 edition - A renewal of the original Atlas, with new actuators architecture, to take advantage of CASE II and added armor. The design is also given limited Omni capabilities. BV (1.0) = ?, BV (2.0) = ?
- AS8-D - Released as a prototype[2] in 3074, this new version sports two Light PPCs, one in each arm. A pair of MML-9s give the design a good punch at both long and short range, while a Rotary AC/5, one Snub-Nose PPC, a single ER Small Laser and two Small Lasers round up the configuration's closer range wallop. BV (1.0) = ?, BV (2.0) = 2,059[3]
- Dual Cockpit refits: The Atlas is one of the Lyran Commonwealth's (and later Lyran Alliance's) preferred 'Mechs to install Dual Cockpits on. Standard refits usually install the Dual Cockpit on a AS7-D or AS7-K, removing one ton of LRM ammunition. BV (1.0) = varies, BV (2.0) = varies
- Atlas II - The advanced Hegemony tech counterpart to the SLDF's regular army's AS7-D Atlas, the AS7-D-H Atlas II was exclusively reserved for SLDF Royal Regiments. BV (1.0) = 1,740, BV (2.0) = 2,169
