Planetary History

Members of Interstellar Expeditions named the planet known as Midden, due to the garbage pits discovered in archaeological sites. During the Age of War Midden was home to a chemical weapons factory, and sometime after that it was home to strip mining concerns and industries that used highly toxic materials as well as a chemical weapons research facility. Midden was apparently used by the Star League and Magistracy of Canopus as a dumping site for toxic waste; the world was staffed by a small population of workers who lived deep underground and oversaw the largely automated facilities. These factories and facilities were shut down by the fall of the first Star League, and the world was abandoned.[1]

In later years Midden once again attracted attention. Several groups of scavengers founded settlements on the world and searched through the waste processing facilities. The most successful of these groups were a group known as the Bannermen, who had created a fission reactor out of the waste products they found on the world. The fission reactor was used to power atmospheric scrubbers and electrolysis machines to create oxygen. The Bannermen were also able to restart a platinum mine. They used this mine's production to trade with merchants and other passing ships.[1]
