The Magellan Six probe took 89 years to discover that the "habitable" planet was a "super-Earth" with a surface gravity almost six times that of Terra. Fortunately, the system has several bountiful asteroid belts and the colonist decided to inhabit them. They were collectively named Columbia after a colonial region in the United States of America.[1]

The Columbia colony thrived and remained undiscovered until 2850, when ComStar found it thanks to a radio telescope array. The first contact was very stressfull for the inhabitants. They "woke up" in the grip of the Second Succession War and wanted no part of that. Trying to get in good relationship with those inhabitants, Comstar turned to Terra's Belters to help in the establishment of diplomatic relations with the isolationist Columbians.[1]
Columbia today remains extremely isolationist because its limited contact with the outside triggered two civil wars. The first happened around 2875, when the Columbian government attempted to centralize power in order to remain hidden from the Inner Sphere. The second happened at about the turn of the millennium, largely because of the economic disruptions from imported technology.[1]
Circa 3068, the Columbia Belters stridently avoid having anything to do with other foreigners, though they do trade the products of cheap Columbian labor for medicine.[1]
