There are two distinct ranks going by Flag Captain:
- In the military of the Duchy of Andurien, it is one of two Captain ranks, the other being Force Captain. While the latter rank is used for captains commanding field formations, Flag Captains typically serve as liaison or as staff officers.[1] (See also: Captain#Duchy of Andurien)
- In the Free Worlds League Military, a Flag Captain is a honorary rank for a senior Navy Captain who has more experience and can lead multi-ship operations. Typically, these officers are being groomed to become a Commodore. They do not bear a special rank insignia.[2] (See also: Lieutenant Colonel#Free Worlds League Military.)
