Olav Haraldssen was a native of Verthandi. He was First Councilman of the Council of Academicians, and served as Verthandi's civilian leader. In this capacity, he was little more than a puppet of the Kuritan military governor, Masayoshi Nagumo.[1]
History
In the latter days of the occupation of Verthandi, Haraldssen and his Council tried to find a way to end the ongoing rebel raids against Kuritan outposts and patrols, which were provoking ever-more brutal punitive reactions from the occupying forces. His proposal of offering an amnesty to the rebels was not only rejected out of hand by Governor-General Nagumo, it caused the Combine official to fly into a screaming rage.[2] The interrogation of captured rebel leader Carlotta Helgameyer implicated Haraldssen as one of a number of people in the city of Regis that were covertly assisting the rebel cause.[3] Acting on her information, Governor Nagumo arrested 117 Verthandians and had them summarily executed. Olav Haraldssen was the first to die.[4]
