Alhena is a world that travels between two suns via an eccentric orbit. This orbit leads to long winters and short summers. The lack of arable land on the surface and a lack of free water on the surface mean that Alhena's residents need to import most of their food. The importance of trade cannot be overemphasized: During the Jihad Alhena's trade was so disrupted that nearly ten percent of the world's population starved to death during the long winter.[1]

Shortly after the world was inducted into the Republic of the Sphere, scientists detected several instabilities in the smaller, innermost sun. These instabilities are reminiscent of other stars that have gone nova. As a result, the Alhenan government has drafted a series of evacuation plans in case the worst comes to pass and the star does explode.[1]
