Unit Description

The Lyran Irregulars are a 'Mech battalion whose legal relationship with the High Command was once described by David Lear as "unclear." [1] The Irregulars are frequently outside the scope of military briefings, being classified as "privately-owned forces." [2] Despite their legal ambiguity, the Lyran Irregulars are focused on ensuring the health of the Lyran state.

History

The Lyran Irregulars' first notable action was to rescue Claudia Steiner, the Grand Duchess of Furillo, from pirate kidnappers some time in the late 3070s. The battalion's rescue action greatly increased the fame of their commander, Rüdiger Steiner, the Grand Duchess' brother, for his skill in the cockpit.[3]

Following their successful rescue of the Grand Duchess, Rudiger and his battalion began patrolling the Lyran Alliance's Periphery border. Though he seemed to be operating on his own initiative, Republic intelligence believed he had House Steiner's best interests in mind. [1]

When Diego Widmer attempted to form his own breakaway state in the Dark Age, the Irregulars were sent to retake the planet of Valloire. Despite the unit being a private noble force,[4] their commanding officer, Kommandant Ludwig Steiner, was placed in command of the operation. A mixed force of the Irregulars and elements of the Second Buena Guards and Carlisle Buena Province Militia made landfall on 6 June, 3147. The task force initially claimed a reservoir outside Valloire's Sisku City, but were dislodged after a failed attempt to seize the spaceport. Steiner led his troops in a retreat, circling around and capturing Sisku City. Valloire was back in Lyran hands on 10 July as the Irregulars' raiding campaign drove the Collective forces offworld with a little over a lance of working 'Mechs. [5]

Officers

Rank Name Command
Commanding Officers of the Lyran Irregulars
Hauptmann Rüdiger Steiner 3085[1]
Kommandant Ludwig Steiner 3147[5]

Tactics

During the Valloire campaign, the Lyran Irregulars waged a campaign of repeated raiding to bleed the enemy force dry of supplies, forcing the Collective forces to make a desperate all-out attack.

Notes

As the unit is a private force rather than one that operates under normal LCAF command, it has not been given a full composition breakdown in Field Manuals or other similar materials.
