The '''autocannon/5''' was a direct-fire ballistic weapon, firing HEAP (''H''igh-''E''xplosive ''A''rmor-''P''iercing) rounds at targets either singly or in bursts.

An autocannon is a direct fire, ballistic weapon.  They fire high velocity, high-explosive, armor-piercing rounds, either singly or in bursts, and are classified by the damage they inflict - in other words, super-sized machine guns.  Calibers in published Battletech works range from 25mm to 203mm. Different manufacturers and models of autocannons have different calibers and rates of fire, grouping into generic "classes" of autocannons with common performances. For example, the Crusher Super Heavy Cannon is a 150mm weapon that fires 10 shells per "shot," while the Chemjet Gun is a 185mm weapon firing more slowly, but both are class-20 autocannons.
+
Different manufacturers and models of autocannons had different calibers (25 mm-203 mm) and rates of fire. Due to this, autocannons were grouped into generic "classes" of similar damage ratings, with autocannon/5s usually having a long range and a small to moderate damage level.

The autocannon/5 (AC/5) is a long-range weapon that inflicts moderate to low damage.

Description[edit]

The autocannon/5 was a direct-fire ballistic weapon, firing HEAP (High-Explosive Armor-Piercing) rounds at targets either singly or in bursts.

Different manufacturers and models of autocannons had different calibers (25 mm-203 mm) and rates of fire. Due to this, autocannons were grouped into generic "classes" of similar damage ratings, with autocannon/5s usually having a long range and a small to moderate damage level.

An autocannon/5 could use special munitions to increase its effectiveness.

History[edit]

Designed for the Terran Alliance, the prototype version of this cannon was among the first autocannons ever made. It first appeared in 2240[3] and was designed to improve the Alliance's military arsenal against newer armor introduced around the same time.[1] Examples of the prototype AC/5's use was on the Saturn-class patrol ship in 2243.[4]
