History[edit]
Selected along with the Ninth Army to face the Wolves, the Tenth Army was primarily assigned to the defense of the target city of Skupo, suffering heavy losses in the bitter fighting as the Natasha Kerensky-led troops pushed the Com Guard forces out. [1]
Once the Wolves had landed, the Tenth army was stationed in the foothills surrounding the Porozistu Mountains. Elements of the Tenth attacked the Seventh Battle Cluster and Third Battle Cluster near Forest's End, a small village. The 283rd Division faced the Fourth Wolf Guards and prevented the Clan unit from surrounding the Tenth Army elements. Then the Sixty-seventh Division began harassing the Wolves' flanks. In response, the Wolf commanders simply smashed into the center of the Tenth's line, forcing the 283rd to withdraw. This led to the rest of the Tenth's units withdrawing under artillery cover as well.[2] After resetting their defensive lines, the Tenth's recon units found that the Wolves were trying to bypass the Tenth to reach their goal. The Tenth redeployed to force the Wolves into combat. Though they held, the Tenth took heavy losses. The Tenth held a ridgetop that overlooked the two cities that were the Wolves goals. The Tenth Army was in danger of being surrounded until the Wolf Spiders tripped an assault by hidden Com Guard units. This forced the Wolves to halt, allowing the other units of the Tenth to withdraw. Though they held Brzo and Skupo for another day, eventually green troops of 138th Division broke under constant assaults from the Thirteenth Wolf Guards. This allowed the Wolf units to take Skupo, but as the Tenth withdrew they faced another major assault by the Wolves. Though many escaped capture, the Wolves took almost two hundred Com Guard warriors prisoner.[3]
Save for the 208th's disastrous involvement in Operation BULLDOG, since Tukayyid the Tenth found itself increasingly dragged into the internal problems of the newly formed Lyran Alliance, with two of Army's divisions working with Lyran Loyalist forces and the others as adjuncts to the Arc-Royal Defense Cordon. The elevation of Victor Steiner-Davion to the position of Precentor Martial worsened the Army's situation, [4] and when the FedCom Civil War erupted, Precentor Gavin Dow took steps to ensure the loyalty of the Tenth to ComStar.[5]
For the most part this saved the Tenth Army from being caught up in the fighting, however Precentor Dag Kesselring's staunchly Lyran 66th Division paid the price for their choice and were annihilated in Peter Steiner-Davion's assault on Tharkad. [5]
After the beginning of the Jihad the Com Guard Armies were stretched too thin. To counteract this, the 7th–12th Armies were disbanded and used to reinforce the 1st–6th Armies. This gave each of the newly reinforced Armies a full six Divisions. The 10th Army was one of the formations affected.[6]
