System Description
The Dubhe system is located near the Chertan and Wing systems.[2][3] A binary system, the Dubhe system consists of an outer K0III yellow secondary star that orbits a cooler inner F0V-class orange giant primary with seven worlds locked into various orbits. Twenty-three astronomical units separate the two stars, and the outer yellow star completes an orbit of the system primary every forty-four years.[1]
System History
The Dubhe system was originally known as the Alpha Ursae Majoris system and was colonized during the First Exodus from Terra.[1][4]
Dubhe VII
Template:InfoBoxPlanetStandard Dubhe VII—more commonly known simply as Dubhe—is the seventh planet in the Dubhe system and orbits the yellow outer star in the system. Dubhe's orbit elongates as it passes between the two stars in the system, resulting in a notable warming of the planet and summers that are warmer than average during this period, along with melting of the polar ice caps and a significant increase in sea levels across Dubhe's surface.[1]
Planetary History
Early history
Dubhe was originally settled because of the abundance of both arable land and minerals present on the planet, with the majority of the early settlements being located in the coastal regions of Holidius. The colonists hadn't anticipated the effect of Dubhe's elongated orbit or the resulting warmer summers, which were dubbed "super summer" seasons. When the polar ice caps melted and sea levels rose, the resulting flooding damaged those settlements located close to the coast, something that took the early settlers generations to adjust to. After a number of these super summers, the majority of the major settlements were moved inland to higher elevations, although over time it was noticed that the summers were becoming warmer and the melting of the polar ice caps more severe, something that was generally considered to be a consequence of the effect of the centuries of industrialization and mining on Dubhe, rather than the slow shift in Dubhe's position towards the system primary and away from the outer star.[1]
Star League Era
During the Star League era the world was jointly administered by the Free Worlds League and the Terran Hegemony. After the Star League fell the world joined the Free Worlds League.[1]
Jihad
During the Jihad, mercenaries employed by the Word of Blake attacked Dubhe, and the resulting battle with the planetary militia nearly levelled Greenwich, the planetary capital city.[1]. In late June 3070 the planetary government and military forces on Dubhe switched their allegiance to the Word of Blake, bringing the world into the Word of Blake Protectorate; Dubhe was one of six worlds to declare for the Blakists in the space of a week, pushing the Protectorate into Free Worlds League space.[5] Dubhe would remain a Blakist world until it was liberated by allied coalition forces fighting as a part of the Free Worlds League front of Operation SCOUR in January 3078.[6]
Dubhe was one of four Protectorate worlds to be attacked simultaneously on the 4th of January by forces from the Free Worlds League front of SCOUR. Attacking at less than full Group strength, the allied coalition forces tasked with liberating Dubhe were the Twentieth Marik Militia and Clan Nova Cat's Alpha Galaxy. The combined strength of the two coalition units was too much for the First and Second Dubhe Protectorate Militia Divisions, who quickly retreated off-world after offering only limited resistance.[7]
Dark Age
The Republic of the Sphere rebuilt Greenwich after Dubhe was incorporated into the Republic, as well as restoring many of the industrial and mining centers that had been destroyed or damaged during the Succession Wars.[1]
