General Jack Sphire was a senior Lyran Commonwealth officer in the late Thirtieth century and early Thirty-first century.[1]

History[edit]

Early Life[edit]

Born during 2976 in one of the fortresses built on Ryde to discourage raids by the Draconis Combine, Armored Outpost Five, Sphire grew up in and around the military. Always knowing he would chose a military career, he was selected for officer training as an adolescent, because of his intelligence and quick reactions. He however also had outside hobbies, and developed a passion for ancient video entertainment, particularly old movies.[1]

Military Career[edit]

Attending Sanglamore Academy, he graduated with honors, and quickly rose through the ranks of the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces. His achievements included successfully sneaking an entire Battalion behind Free Worlds League lines on New Kyoto, during an attack on that world. After spending time within the LCAF's Strategy and Tactics Division, and proving his strategic abilities, he was appointed as the Margrave of Ryde Theater as of 3015. This appointment was also aided by Sphire's distaste for politics and straight-forward manner, which extended to actively seeking to avoid political figures, an attitude Archon Katrina Steiner though would help protect him from anti-Commonwealth sentiment within the Ryde Theater. On the flip side however, it did cause consideration friction between Sphire, and the planetary nobles and leaders in the Ryde Theater.[1]

Margrave of Ryde Theater[edit]

In 3022, Sphire participated in battle on Rigil Kentarus, when the Draconis Combine launched a surprise invasion while Sphire was conducting a joint exercise with Federated Suns Marshal Ran Felsner. Despite poor communications between Sphire and Felsner's forces, and the large Kuritan force, the combined Steiner and Davion defenders were ultimately able to force the Combine units to retreat off-world.[2]

Operation GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG[edit]

At the start of the Fourth Succession War as part of Operation GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG, General Sphire was named as one of General Nondi Steiner's key regional commanders, alongside Mitch Felspar and Jerry Troka.[3]

Operation HOLDUR[edit]

During the Fourth Succession War, Sphire was the principle architect of Operation HOLDUR, an operation in 3029 designed to break the deadlock which had developed in the Ryde Theater, and capture Draconis Combine worlds including Altair. Sphire's plan was aggressive, stripping the Commonwealth of many of its reserves, and so was only approved by the Archon on the proviso it would focus on the Terran end of the front so the forces used might be available to respond to any attacks by the Free Worlds League.

Commencing on 1 June 3029, Operation HOLDUR was successful in capturing a number of Combine planets, as well as in other major goal of attriting the Combine forces. It did not however manage to gain the key world of Altair for the Commonwealth however, from which Sphire's forces had to eventually withdraw, and eventually bogged down after suffering excessive losses in the face of Tai-sa Theodore Kurita's reorganization of the Combine's defenses.[4]

Legacy[edit]

Sphire's family continued to provide senior officers to the LCAF long his death, with Kommandant-General Jack Sphire III being the aide to Donegal Province military commander Hauptmann-General Jasek Kelswa-Steiner, as of 3145.[5]
