Tensions between the Capellan Confederation and the Federated Suns erupted when Capellan space forces bombarded Novaya Zemlya IV in what is known as the Novaya Zemlya Massacre.[1]

The Capellan Confederation attacked the Federated Suns planet of Novaya Zemlya IV in 2399, massacring seventy-five percent of the population and crippling the planet's agricultural and industrial centers for centuries.[2]
Even though this was close to the start of the Age of War, the Novaya Zemlya Massacre was remarkable as it was the first time that a massed fleet of spaceships (including the Du Shi Wang-class battleship) bombarded a planet's civilian infrastructure—cities, industrial centers, and even agricultural lands—from orbit.[2][3][4][5]
This attack prompted the Federated Suns to launch an immediate military buildup, starting with WarShips.[2]
