System Description
The Umka system is located near the Gouderak and Vakarel systems[2][3] and consists of a class K6V primary orbited by at least four planets.[1]
System History
The Umka system was either settled by the Magistracy of Canopus during or shortly before the Age of War, or it was an already-inhabited system that became significant enough during this era that Inner Sphere nations began recording its location on maps.[4][5][6][7]
Umka IV

Umka IV - more commonly referred to simply as Umka - is the fourth planet in the system.[1]
Planetary History
Reunification War
Immediately prior to the Reunification War Umka was a world within the Magistracy of Canopus, where the major industries were aquaculture and deep-sea farming and with two battalions of the First Canopian Light Horse stationed on-world in support of the irregular ground forces that made up the planetary garrison.[8]
War between the Star League and the Magistracy of Canopus was inevitable after the Magistracy joined the other Periphery nations in rejecting the Pollux Proclamation; Umka was an early target in the initial Star League Defense Force campaign against the Magistracy, with a flotilla of SLDF craft arriving in the local system in August 2577. The SLDF forces quickly dispersed the local pickets and began planetary landings with the Fifty-sixth Brigade arriving on Umka soon after to capture the world.[8] The mercenary unit Mieselsen's Marauders had been on Umka immediately prior to the Star League invasion, but had been redeployed to Vakarel before the SLDF troops arrived, leaving the First Canopian Light Horse in place to support the planetary garrison.[9]
The local garrison refused to surrender easily, and while the Fifty-sixth Brigade were able to capture the main industrial complexes quickly and eventually force the First Canopian Light Horse contingent off-world, the remaining garrison forces proceeded to wage a guerrilla war. Breaking up into small groups, the garrison dispersed around the islands and archipelagos of Umka and forced the Fifty-sixth Brigade to spend three months winkling them out; guerrilla groups with hovercraft or armed IndustrialMechs would frequently relocate across the shallow seas between islands, frustrating the SLDF forces efforts.[8]
Although the Fifty-sixth Brigade were responsible for capturing Umka, the SLDF task force responsible for conquering the Magistracy stationed a number of other units on Umka during 2577, units which included the Sixty-third Royal Brigade (from the Twenty-First Royal Division), Third Regulan Hussars and the Juggernaut regiment of the Stewart Dragoons.[10]
The Magistracy of Canopus had 13 worlds annexed by the Free Worlds League, either during the Reunification War[11] or by Star League decree in 2602,[12] and Umka was one of these worlds.
The Jihad
When the Free Worlds League disbanded as a state, many worlds with notable industrial systems found themselves being incorporated by the various provincial states established afterwards - or attacked by them. As an independent world, Umka found itself in a precarious position, but managed to obtain protection from elements of the Eighteenth Marik Militia.[13]
Umka was one of many worlds to be struck during the wave of Bloody Tricentennial attacks that swept across the Inner Sphere in the wake of the fall of the Word of Blake Protectorate. The city of Deep Hamilton was hit by a number of bomb blasts in the early hours of the 12th of October 3080 that killed more than 1200 people and devastated the commercial district of the city; this was followed by an attack that breached a major dam near the city later in the day, flooding the city. The breaching of the dam was witnessed during a live broadcast of the Umka World News local news network being presented by Julian Costamayor and his news team, who were most likely killed in the resulting flooding.[14]

Geography
Umka is a water-rich world where the major landmasses are chains of islands.[8] The major landmasses are named Adriatic, Barajevo, Meljak, Sava, Velimer and Vranic.[1]
Planetary Locations
- Beevale: The main location or garrison of the planetary militia, located on Vranic.[1]
- Deep Hamilton: a major city on Umka, devastated during the Bloody Tricentennial attacks.[14]
- Shenville: the planetary capital city, located on Barajevo; Shenville is also home to the Kerr-McGinniss manufacturing facilities.[1]
